For the first time, Tesla Inc will be entering India in 2021, Nitin Gadkari, transport minister told the Indian Express on Monday. Talks of Tesla’s plans for India has been going around for some time now and finally, after a long wait, Tesla is to venture the Indian market by the first quarter of 2021, as per the reports.
With four models in the portfolio currently, Model S, Model 3, Model X and Model Y, the first model to be launched will be the entry-level Model 3 Electric Sedan. In October, Elon Musk, Tesla CEO, had claimed to introduce the electric vehicle brand in India in 2021. Replying to a tweet, Elon Musk promised to launch its brand and reports confirm the same.
The entry-level Model 3 which was first introduced in the year 2017, is the cheapest model among Tesla vehicles with prices over $74,739 (5.5 million Indian rupees) as reported on Saturday by the Economic Times.
Although, Elon Musk confirmed India foray in 2021 on Sunday with a reply on Twitter, however, said that it would not happen in January.
On the design front, the Model 3 is quite similar to Model S; but a relatively smaller one. The overall clean silhouette with two 18-inch alloy wheel options is the focus point. The electric car also comes with an optional performance pack, so that one can opt for bigger 20-inch wheels with Pirelli P Zero performance tyres, a carbon rear spoiler, and sporty pedals. Loaded with features, its mammoth 15-inch touchscreen infotainment system with over-the-air updates is the highlight. Model 3 also features 12-way power-adjustable heated front seats, 14-speaker audio system, two wireless charging ports and tinted sunroof. Tesla’s famous Autopilot feature remains intact. It is yet to be known whether all of these premium goodies, especially the autonomous ride feature, will be reserved.
As of now the Tesla Model 3 will be a CBU import though the company is likely to set up local assemblies in the country later.
